Isaiah 2:1–5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it.

Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.

“ For out of Zion shall go forth instruction and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD!


It is a dark world into which light has come and is coming.

It is estimated that there are anywhere from dozens to over 100 wars being waged right now in the world.

The threat of war is always looming. Bombastic pronouncements accompany our drives to continually arm ourselves for conflict.

We are goading I each other to hating and mistrusting each other.

Madison Avenue nudges us to indulge every one of our desires and to anesthetize every discomfort.

Yet, the sometimes low, soft call continues, “Come.”

Mary knew how to be in the moment with Jesus. Jesus saw the value in both kinds of hospitality, but He wanted Martha to know that when tending to details interfered with tending to the Master Himself, just being with Him was all that really counted. It is still what really counts. It counts for the busy mother, the harried executive, the flustered teacher, the hard-driven salesman, and the politician in the pressure cooker of legislative compromise. Extraordinary Generosity “And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.” - Acts4:32 One of the characteristics of the new believers in the Jerusalem church was their generous hearts. They did not consider their time, possessions, or personal gifts their own. Whatever they had, they submitted to God, and it became available for the Kingdom. The church was not an economic utopia, but a body of Christians, freely associating and freely giving themselves to God through Jesus Christ. Our lives are more complicated today. We have financial advisors and career paths, personal assets, and discretionary time. Our day planners are filled with events that we must juggle to “make time” for ourselves.
